Salt Spring Wild Cider - Gillian mcconnell
I am an interdisciplinary artist.
Sometimes the medium is my message—the content evolves from the tactile quality of materials and substrates—the surrender to an intuitive, creative process. Sometimes the message dictates my medium. I believe that paradox is real and dichotomy an illusion. I employ visual metaphor to explore this belief in the context of politics, sociology, culture and religion. We live in a divide to conquer world. None of us is immune to the conditioning that pits male against female, black against white, rich against poor, democrat against plutocrat, representational against abstract. Because I write poetry, I consider titles an integral component of my work. They choose themselves from verse that embodies the spirit of each series and each work. I studied Fine Art at Queen’s University at Kingston, graduating in 1980 with a major in printmaking and a minor in art history. |
