9th Annual Easter Art Tour 2015
April brings showers, flowers and the Easter Art Tour. Now in it’s ninth year, the Salt Spring Easter Art Tour is an annual self-guided Artist Studio and Gallery tour running from Good Friday, April 3rd until Easter Sunday, April 5th. There are a host of special exhibits in galleries and cafes - all showcasing the Fine Arts including painting, sculpture and photography - but in true Island style, exhibits of art are also to be seen in such diverse places as frame shops, a bank, hotel lobby, bookshop, B&B, and a real estate office. As a focus, each year a feature exhibit is held at Historic Mahon Hall in Ganges featuring a single artist or group of artists and is a great place to start your tour. This year, an exciting show called ‘Five Women in Abstraction’ includes the accomplished abstractionists Barbra Edwards, Margie Korrison, Nicola Morgan, Helen Ormiston Smith and Michela Sorrentino, and continues until Sunday, April 12th. Everyone is getting in on the act, and Ganges comes alive with art on opening night with three additional openings at, Steffich Fine Art, Salt Spring Gallery and the Jill Louise Campbell Gallery. An art night not to be missed! In addition to artist talks during the run of the show, this year a special musical event hosted by the Japanese Garden Society called ‘A Tapestry of Japanese Sounds Vol. 2’ will take place on Thursday, April 9th at 7:30 featuring two amazing and highly achieved young musicians of traditional Japanese music. Koji Yamaguchi and Yoshihiko Fueki on shamisen and taiko drums will perform to benefit the Heiwa Garden and other activities to acknowledge the Japanese-Canadian pioneers on Salt Spring. Dynamic art and music come together in one amazing experience! Self guided Tour maps and info about the participating studios and galleries are available at Historic Mahon Hall. Web and mobile users can visit the website for images of the artist’s work, their websites and contact info and a google map to their location. Info and links about the musical performance can also be found on the website. The Tour is a proudly sponsored program of the Salt Spring Arts Council and is co-sponsored once again this year by the Gulf Islands Driftwood. There will be an opening reception on Friday, April 3rd from 6-9 at Mahon Hall with the artists in attendance.
