Nicola Morgan

Artist Statement

For me the process of art making is mysterious and very personal. It is to surrender to an experience that has no time or reference to anything but my actions both purposeful and undetermined. I find that I am never really aware of when a painting is beginning or ending. I simply paint, enjoying the surface filling up with color and form until some small road sign appears. Then I start to follow…

I see my work as a delicate balance between the intended expression of an idea and the process of painting itself. Through the force of paint, texture, form and color I plot a course. This plan is often blindsided by various unconscious acts of pure expression. It is precisely this conflict that keeps me engaged in the act of painting.

I work in various mediums. Such as acrylic and oil paints as well as explorations in cold wax, collage and mixed materials. My surface is canvas or board but I tend towards the later as it supports the textures that are important to my intent.
