Michela Sorrentino

Artist Statement

SORRENTINO works with unusual combinations of colour juxtaposed
with dramatic marks and unique symbols. Layer upon layer of her intuitive mark making often express narratives or circumstances of every day life.

Sorrentino explores abstractivism using her strong intuition and bold sense of design. Many of her paintings are built through a process of subtle narrative using stream of consciousness writings and snippets of inner conversations blending recurring patterns with
storytelling.

Making her marks and gestures quickly on the surface enable her to put her more logical and critical voice aside while tapping into her more spiritual and intuitive mind. All along, Sorrentino enlists to stay true to her inner process by balancing spontaneity and energy with discipline and intention.

Michela Sorrentino - painter

Biography
Michela Sorrentino was born in Montreal, Quebec, but grew up in West Vancouver, BC. She studied Fine Art at Capilano University and then went on to further studies in art at Les Beaux Arts, then specializing in textile design at ESMOD in Paris, France. She worked as a textile print designer in France and Italy for many years overseeing print collections in India and China before returning to Canada where she started a graphic design company with her husband, Hermani + Sorrentino Design.

Of recent years, painting has become Michela's main practice although she also still enjoys printmaking and monotype. In her work, Michela uses many mediums and often finds herself breaking the rules and mixing mediums such as cold wax, oil, acrylic, ink, gouache and charcoal.

Ongoing education includes having worked with artists such as Harold Klunder, Eva Isaksen, Nicholas Wilton, Rebecca Crowell and Steve Aimone.
