Empty Places - Open Spaces is an art show about personal grief. It is an exploration by each artist of their own emotional responses to a death close to them: a relative - a friend - a mentor. The art is not about abstract grief - feelings of loss for the environment for instance. It is a reflection of each artists' intimate journey & feelings after losing someone who was important in their own lives.
Grief is a complex emotional state. There are feelings of loss, sadness, anger. A death can leave an Empty Place in a person's life. There can however also be resolution, hope, happiness after a loss. The death of someone can also create an Open Space in a life. This space can - needs - be filled with new experiences, a new life, a new journey. There is a future to be explored even after a loss. Some of the pieces exhibited are quite new - reflecting a recent loss in an artist's life, while others were created 20 or more years ago. The art shared in this show is as varied as each individual's response to their grief. |
