Garry Oaks Winery - Gillian mcconnell
At Garry Oaks Winery we grow our grapes naturally, respecting the native conditions - sun, wind, soil - of our vineyard. We have been called meticulous and we freely confess to being so, from planning, planting and tending our vineyard, to coaxing out the unique and distinct qualities of each of our wines.
Our feature artist is Gillian McConnell, who says, "I am an interdisciplinary artist. Sometimes the medium is my message—the content evolves from the tactile quality of materials and substrates—the surrender to an intuitive, creative process. Sometimes the message dictates my medium. I believe that paradox is real and dichotomy an illusion. I employ visual metaphor to explore this belief in the context of politics, sociology, culture and religion. We live in a divide to conquer world. None of us is immune to the conditioning that pits male against female, black against white, rich against poor, democrat against plutocrat, representational against abstract. Because I write poetry, I consider titles an integral component of my work. They choose themselves from verse that embodies the spirit of each series and each work. I studied Fine Art at Queen’s University at Kingston, graduating in 1980 with a major in printmaking and a minor in art history." address: 1880 Fulford Ganges Rd. phone: 250 653 4687 website: garryoakswinery.com artist website: www.artbygillian.com hours: Fri-Sun 11:30-5, Mon. 11:30-3 |
