The collograph is a form of intaglio printmaking, similar to etching. The process is conducive to creating highly embossed paper prints filled with texture. With collographs I am able to use a traditional printmaking technique in a modern experimental way.
The process involves building up texture on a surface plate. The plate can be made of any flat surface, and the texture can be anything from bits off the forest floor to man made things such as keys or burlap. The plate is then sealed, inked up and run with paper through an etching press. Many of my pieces are collages made up of multiple bits of collographs cut up and sewn together. All together I enjoy the endless experimentation that keeps me interested in this wonderful medium. Though collographs are my focus I also use other media in my art making including drawing, painting, and papermaking. |
